This Passbook to Pedestrian Safety has been designed specifically tophoto of full package contents
meet most of the O&M  pedestrian skill needs of children who are visually impaired. The goals of the program are to encourage positive pedestrian attitudes of elementary children and to teach them success. Every child who has the potential for independent mobility should be enrolled in this program. The students should enjoy earning stickers for their individual passbooks, and it will encourage them to be actively involved in their O&M programs. Itinerant teachers will enjoy the easy to follow guide to the Passbook program.

Disabilities: From Tolerance to Inclusion

Written for parents and educators of children who are visually impaired, this book offers practical suggestions for promoting the development of friendships and positive peer acceptance of children. Factors relevant to the social development and interaction of children with visual impairments are presented. Although written in response to research involving children with visual impairments, the multiple factors common to all children with disabilities are clearly presented. This book provides an insightful look at the array of factors to be considered in social settings like public school classrooms and playgrounds. The book includes specific suggestions for classroom teachers, special educators, administrators, and parents. Lists of resources used in designing programs to promote social acceptance are included in the appendices.

A 16-minute program that presents demonstrations of sighted guides negotiating doorways, stairways, escalators, seating, and narrow passageways.

a 14-minute programs showing adaptive training techniques for students with multiple disabilities.

"Can Do Too: Physical Education for Students with Visual Impairments,"


a 20-minute presentation of the adaptations and equipment that can help students with visual impairments participate in physical education classes.

"Work in Sight: Cooperative Education Program for Students with Visual Impairments,"


a 14-minute video addressing worksite orientation and adaptations that can help support student work placements.

"Finding Your Place: APSEA Transition Services for Students Who are Blind or Visually Impaired."


This 17- minute video describes APSEA's transition services for students who are blind or visually impaired and for students who are blind or visually impaired with other disabilities. Transition planning is a collaborative service to assist students and their families in long range planning for their future and begins when a student reaches the age of 14 or enters Grade 9, whichever comes first. APSEA employs designated staff called "Transition Facilitators" who gather a transition team which address any or all of the following issues: accurate career choice, independent living skills, housing, transportation, budgeting, recreation and leisure, post-secondary options and employment. Services in support of successful transition are available both in the student's home community and in the form of short-term programs at the APSEA Centre in Halifax.
