Understanding ADHD and Trauma in the Classroom: Foundations for Effective Support

This session examines how ADHD and trauma affect learning, behaviour, and emotional regulation in the classroom. It will highlight the connections and distinctions between ADHD and trauma, allowing participants to become familiar with recognizing each and implementing effective support strategies.

Kelsey MacNeil works as a regional behaviour specialist with 12 years of experience supporting P–12 students. She holds Master’s degrees in Applied Behaviour Analysis and Inclusive Education, with a focus on children’s mental health and trauma. Kelsey works closely with educators, students, and families in her home of Cape Breton to implement evidence-based strategies that support children’s learning, development, and emotional well-being through trauma-informed practices and behaviour interventions. Outside of work, she enjoys running, staying active, and spending time with her two daughters.

Andrea Mahoney is a School Psychologist specializing in evidence-based assessment and interventions for diverse learners. Passionate about inclusive education, she collaborates with school teams, students, and their families to support student well-being. Andrea holds an M.A. in School Psychology from MSVU and is currently completing her candidate register psychologist license. Andrea's passion lies in supporting the school community by completing comprehensive assessments/diagnoses, evidence-based interventions, and supporting student advocacy. Outside of work, Andrea enjoys teaching spin classes, playing senior women's soccer, and going camping.
