Parents whose child is blind or has low vision may wonder what effect blindness or low vision will have on development. Children who are blind or have low vision are as unique and varied as any other group of children, but they may learn about the world in slightly different ways. Therefore, developmental processes should be monitored and encouraged.
APSEA has Preschool Specialists in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island to support the individual needs of children who are blind or visually impaired and their families during the critical development years of birth to age five. Through home visits and support in early childhood settings, APSEA Education Support Teachers, with support from the Preschool Specialists, work with family members, care givers, and other professionals to create a program plan for learning and skill development for each child. This support includes helping the child transition from home/preschool to Primary.
